The Unexpected Way Creatine Has Been Helping Me Handle Stress

I started taking creatine for a completely different reason. I wasn't trying to become a gym girl. I wasn't chasing bigger muscles. And honestly, I wasn't expecting much to happen mentally. I'd mostly heard about creatine in the context of workouts, muscle growth, and athletic performance. But after taking creatine monohydrate consistently for about two weeks, I started noticing something I wasn't expecting:
I felt less bothered by stress.
Not that my life suddenly became stress-free. The stressful things were still there. The work was still there. The deadlines were still there. My to-do list definitely didn't disappear. But my reaction to everything felt different. I could sit down with a bunch of things to do, even when I was already stressed, and actually work through them. I could focus. I wasn't getting as mentally overwhelmed by every little thing. And the strangest part?
I felt almost... unbothered. Not numb. Not checked out. Just noticeably less reactive. At one point I remember thinking, Why do I feel like I'm slightly high right now? 😂 Not actually high, obviously. More like that feeling of being unusually calm and mentally detached from the chaos around me. And that's what made me start looking more closely at creatine and the brain. Because maybe the reason creatine is so interesting isn't just what it can do for muscles.
Maybe there's something worth paying attention to when it comes to mental energy, stress and sleep deprivation too.

Creatine Was Never Just a Muscle Supplement
Creatine has spent years being associated with protein shakes, gym bags and people trying to lift heavier weights.
But creatine isn't something your body invented specifically for the gym.
It's a naturally occurring compound that's already found in your body, including your brain.
One of the jobs of the creatine-phosphocreatine system is helping cells regenerate ATP, the energy currency they use to power all kinds of cellular processes.
And your brain uses a lot of energy.
So when I started reading about creatine and cognitive function, the idea started making more sense to me.
Especially because stress and poor sleep can make it feel like the brain has suddenly gone into power-saving mode.
You know that feeling.
The body is awake.
The eyes are open.
But the brain is basically saying:
"We're going to need you to lower your expectations today."
That's the kind of brain fog I'm talking about.
Why Stress and Poor Sleep Can Leave the Brain Running on Empty
I've noticed that when I'm stressed, it's not always physical exhaustion that gets me first.
Sometimes it's the mental exhaustion.
Everything feels harder.
Concentrating takes more effort.
Small tasks feel strangely overwhelming.
I'll look at something I need to do and think, Why does this feel like such a big deal?
And when sleep hasn't been great on top of that, it gets even worse.
Your brain is an energy-hungry organ, and sleep plays an important role in recovery.
During periods of sleep deprivation, cognitive performance can suffer. Attention, working memory, reaction time and the ability to process information can all become more difficult.
That's one reason the relationship between creatine and sleep deprivation caught my attention.
Creatine is involved in the phosphocreatine system, which helps cells rapidly regenerate ATP when energy demands increase.
That doesn't mean taking creatine magically gives the brain unlimited energy.
It also doesn't mean creatine fixes chronic stress or replaces sleep.
But it does make the question interesting:
Could having more available creatine help the brain cope when energy demands are higher?
Research suggests there may be something to that.

But What About the Brain?
Here's the part that really caught my attention.
Creatine isn't just involved in muscle energy. Your brain uses creatine too.
By increasing the availability of phosphocreatine, creatine supplementation may help support the brain's ability to rapidly regenerate ATP basically, one of the ways brain cells keep up with their energy demands.
And that gets interesting when the brain is working overtime.
Research on creatine and cognitive function is actually pretty interesting, although the results aren't completely consistent.
Some studies have found potential benefits for areas such as memory, attention and processing speed, while other research has found more limited or mixed effects. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found possible benefits for memory, attention time and processing speed, but the researchers also noted that the evidence wasn't equally strong across every area of cognition.
What really caught my attention, though, is the research looking at situations where the brain is under extra pressure.
Sleep deprivation is one example.
A 2026 systematic review found an early positive trend for creatine supplementation during acute sleep deprivation, although the researchers emphasized that the evidence is still limited and that more high-quality studies are needed.
So I'm not going to say creatine is a magic stress supplement.
But I do think there's a pretty interesting question here:
Could supporting the brain's energy system make it easier to function when the brain is already under a lot of demand?
That's something researchers are still trying to understand.
That actually lines up with what I've been noticing.
I'm not walking around feeling artificially energized.
I don't feel like I drank five coffees.
It's more like my brain doesn't seem as easily overwhelmed when there's a lot going on.
For me, that's been the surprising part.
A typical daily amount used in research is around 3–5 grams of creatine monohydrate, and staying adequately hydrated is a good idea.
I've been taking mine consistently for about two weeks, so I'm still paying attention to what changes over time.
But so far, the biggest difference hasn't been what I expected from a "muscle supplement."
It's been how unbothered I feel when I'm stressed and still have things to get done.
Why Researchers Are Interested in Creatine and the Brain
Here's something I didn't realize when I first started taking creatine:
The brain has its own creatine system.
Creatine and phosphocreatine are involved in the process of helping cells regenerate ATP, which is basically the energy currency cells use to do their jobs.
And the brain has some pretty serious energy demands.
That's one reason researchers are interested in what creatine supplementation might do beyond muscle performance.
But there's an important distinction here.
Increasing creatine availability in the brain doesn't automatically mean that taking creatine will make everyone think faster, remember more, or suddenly feel less stressed.
The research doesn't support making that kind of promise.
In fact, recent reviews have found that while creatine supplementation can increase brain creatine content, the effects on cognitive performance are still somewhat mixed.
What seems particularly interesting is what happens when the brain is under extra demand.
Things like sleep deprivation and mental fatigue have become areas of interest in creatine research.
And honestly, that makes sense to me.
Because when I'm stressed and running on poor sleep, I don't necessarily need more physical energy.
I need my brain to cooperate with me. 😂
I need to be able to sit down, focus on one thing, and actually get through it without feeling like everything is ten times harder than it should be.
That's the part of the research that makes me curious about my own experience.
Then I Started Noticing Something in My Own Life
This is where it gets personal.
I've been taking creatine monohydrate for about two weeks.
And I didn't start it thinking, This is going to make me calmer.
But somewhere along the way, I started noticing that stressful situations didn't seem to get under my skin as much.
I'd have things to get done while feeling stressed, but instead of mentally spiraling around everything I needed to do, I could just... do it.
One task.
Then another.
Then another.
My focus felt steadier.
And there was this weird sense of:
"Okay. This is stressful, but whatever. Let's just handle it."
That is VERY different from how stress can normally feel.
Usually stress can make everything feel urgent.
Your brain starts jumping between five things at once.
You think about what needs to happen next while you're still trying to finish the thing you're currently doing.
And suddenly you've spent 30 minutes thinking about everything instead of actually doing anything.
I haven't experienced that same level of mental friction since starting creatine.
Could that be creatine?
Maybe.
Could other things be contributing?
Absolutely.
I'm also paying more attention to nervous-system regulation, sleep and overall recovery, so I wouldn't pretend that I can isolate one variable and say, Yep, this is definitely the creatine.
That's not how real life works.
But the change was noticeable enough that it made me curious.
What Could Creatine Have to Do With Mental Fatigue?
Think of the phosphocreatine system as part of your cells' quick-access energy reserve.
When ATP is being used rapidly, phosphocreatine can help regenerate it.
The brain has its own creatine system, which is one reason researchers have become interested in whether supplementation could influence cognitive performance.
Some human studies have found improvements in areas such as memory, attention or processing speed, particularly under conditions where the brain is already under greater demand.
Sleep deprivation is one of those conditions.
And that's particularly interesting because sleep deprivation doesn't just make you sleepy.
It can affect attention, reaction time, working memory, mood and the ability to think clearly.
So when I came across research looking at creatine in the context of sleep deprivation, I immediately understood why it caught my attention.
What if part of the benefit isn't feeling "energized" in the traditional sense?
What if it's simply having a little more mental reserve when the brain is being pushed?
Of course, that's my way of making sense of what I'm experiencing. I can't actually tell from my own experience whether creatine is responsible for that change.
That's where the research and my personal experience have to stay separate.
The research gives me a reason to be curious.
My experience gives me something to be curious about.
But neither one lets me say, "Creatine definitely reduces stress."
And I'm okay with that.
That feels much closer to what I've personally experienced.
I wouldn't describe my experience as feeling stimulated.
If anything, it's almost the opposite.
I feel like I have more room between the stressful thing happening and my reaction to it.
And that difference is huge.

Creatine, Magnesium and Ashwagandha Aren't Doing the Same Thing
I've also seen creatine discussed alongside supplements like magnesium and ashwagandha, but I don't think of them as interchangeable.
They're doing different things.
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body and plays important roles in nervous-system function and normal energy metabolism.
Ashwagandha has been studied for stress and perceived stress, including its potential effects on cortisol.
Creatine is primarily interesting to me from the cellular energy side.
So I don't think of it as:
"Which one should I take to make stress go away?"
I'd rather think:
What part of the problem am I actually trying to support?
Because stress isn't just one thing.
There's the stress response.
There's sleep.
There's mental fatigue.
There's physical fatigue.
There's recovery.
There's the energy your cells need to keep doing their jobs.
And sometimes trying to solve all of that with one supplement doesn't make much sense.
How I'm Taking Creatine
The creatine I've been taking is Nutrex Research Creatine Monohydrate.

Micronized doesn't mean it's a different or more powerful type of creatine. It's still creatine monohydrate the form that's been studied extensively.

How Long Does It Take to Notice a Difference?
Creatine isn't really an instant-results supplement.
Because you're gradually increasing the amount of creatine stored in your body, it can take a few weeks of consistent daily use before you notice anything. For some people, it may take longer potentially a couple of months to appreciate the full effect.
I've been taking it for about two weeks, and that's actually when I started noticing the changes I mentioned earlier: feeling less bothered by stress, being able to focus more easily, and getting through my workload without feeling quite as mentally overwhelmed.
But I'm also not assuming that two weeks is the full picture.
I'm going to keep taking it consistently and see what happens over the next several weeks.
That's probably the best approach with creatine in general:
Don't take it expecting an immediate feeling. Take it consistently, pay attention to how you feel and give your body time.
Is Creatine Safe?
Creatine monohydrate is generally considered safe for most healthy adults when taken at recommended amounts.
That said, supplements aren't one-size-fits-all.
If there are existing health conditions, kidney concerns, or medications involved, it's worth checking with a doctor or qualified healthcare professional before adding creatine to the routine.
For me, the takeaway isn't that everyone needs creatine.
It's that it's an interesting, well-studied supplement that's worth understanding especially when the conversation goes beyond muscles and into brain energy, mental fatigue and handling stress.
When Stress Starts Showing Up as Irritability
There's another side of chronic stress that doesn't always get talked about:
Irritability and anger.
Sometimes stress doesn't look like lying in bed unable to function.
Sometimes it looks like having absolutely no patience left.
A small inconvenience feels enormous. Someone says the wrong thing and suddenly the reaction feels bigger than the situation. Or everything is technically fine, but the body still feels tense and ready to react.
That's part of why I think it's important to look beyond supplements.
Creatine may help support the brain's energy demands, but understanding what stress is actually doing to the brain and nervous system is another piece of the puzzle.

Because sometimes the goal isn't just having more energy to push through stress.

If Stress Is Still Running the Show
Creatine might help support the brain when it's under pressure, but there's another piece I'm not ignoring:
The stress itself.
Because feeling more capable of handling stress doesn't mean there shouldn't be anything to work on underneath it.

Because sometimes the goal isn't to eliminate every stressful thing happening in life.
It's learning how to stop carrying all of it around in the brain at the same time.
And No, I Don't Think Creatine Replaces Sleep
This part matters.
If you're sleeping four hours a night and hoping creatine is going to make that okay, that's not what I'm saying.
Sleep is still sleep.
Creatine isn't a substitute for rest.
And if chronic stress is constantly keeping the nervous system in a heightened state, taking a supplement doesn't magically address the reason you're stressed in the first place.
This is actually something I've become much more interested in lately.
Because sometimes we're so focused on finding the next supplement, tea, powder or hack that we forget to ask:
Why is the body constantly running like there's an emergency?
That's a completely different question.
And it's one I'm much more interested in exploring.
Why Supplements Only Address Part of the Problem
Creatine can be one piece of supporting brain energy and mental performance.
But a nervous system that's constantly stuck in a state of alert can keep generating the conditions that make us feel exhausted in the first place.
That's why I don't see supplements as the entire answer.
They're tools.
They can support certain aspects of how the body functions.
But they don't replace sleep, stress management, movement, nutrition, recovery or actually dealing with the things that keep the mind and body on high alert.
Sometimes the bigger question isn't:
"What supplement should I take?"
It's:
"Why am I so exhausted in the first place?"
And that's a much more interesting question.
The Part About Creatine That I Didn't Expect
When I started creatine, I expected the conversation to be about muscles.
Instead, I've become much more interested in the brain.
Because the most noticeable thing for me so far hasn't been feeling stronger during a workout.
It's been this strange sense of mental resilience.
Stress is still stress.
I still have things to deal with.
I still have days where I'm tired.
But lately, I feel like I can sit down and work through things without every stressful thought pulling me in a different direction.
And that "unbothered" feeling?
That's probably the best way I can describe it.
Not:
I don't care.
More like:
"I care. I just don't need to panic about it."
And honestly, I'll take that.

So, Is Creatine Worth Looking Into?
For me, after two weeks, I'm definitely curious enough to keep taking it.
But I'm also keeping my expectations realistic.
The research on creatine and cognitive function is promising, particularly around mental fatigue, sleep deprivation and increased cognitive demand, but it isn't proof that everyone will experience the same effect I have.
My experience is just that my experience.
What I find interesting is that my experience seems to fit with a bigger question researchers are already investigating:
Could supporting the brain's energy system make it easier to function when the brain is under pressure?
I don't think creatine is the answer to chronic stress.
I don't think it replaces sleep.
And I definitely don't think it's a magic "calm down" supplement.
But after experiencing this subtle shift in how I handle stressful days, I understand why the brain side of creatine deserves more attention.
Because sometimes supporting the stressed brain isn't about forcing yourself to feel calm.
Sometimes it's about giving the brain enough resources to keep functioning when life isn't particularly calm.
And that's the part of creatine I didn't expect to care about.
The muscles got all the attention.
I'm much more interested in what it might be doing for the brain.
What the Research Says
I started this article because of something I noticed in my own life, but I wanted to look beyond my own experience too.
The research on creatine and the brain is still developing.
Researchers have studied creatine's role in brain energy metabolism, cognitive function, mental fatigue and sleep deprivation. Some findings are promising, but the results aren't consistent enough to say that creatine will reduce stress or improve cognition for everyone.
That's why I'm sharing this article as a personal experience rather than medical advice or a claim that creatine is a treatment for stress.
